A Boston-based online travel company is attempting to draw tenants to Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village by letting them rent out their homes to tourists, the New York Post reported.
FlipKey, a vacation rental website owned by TripAdvisor, made the offer — $1,000 to anyone who agreed to turn his apartment into a hotel — in a promotion mailed to residents in the neighborhoods.
City officials are warning residents not to take the deal because it’s against the law to rent or sublet an apartment for less than a month.
City Councilman Dan Garodnick, who lives in Peter Cooper Village, wrote a letter to FlipKey officials urging them to halt their plan.
“The law is so written because residences and hotels have different and distinct needs to ensure the safety of the people staying in them,” Garodnick wrote in the letter.
FlipKey did not comment to the newspaper. [NYP] –Mark Maurer
