The proposed soccer stadium in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park just got two major new supporters. The New York Yankees and Manchester City, which announced their plans today to create a new Major League Soccer team, said their first choice for a spot to play is the contentious Queens plot, Brownstoner reported.

Neighborhood residents and local politicians have gathered to protest development at the site, on the grounds that a stadium would take away parkland. Potential development plans include building a soccer stadium, a tennis arena and retail, as previously reported.

But the proposal is far from becoming a reality. The plan still needs to filter through the seven-month city Uniform Land Use Review Procedure, or ULURP, and it hasn’t yet been submitted.

“But in considering any stadium site, we will listed first,” said head of Manchester City Ferran Soriano. “This is what we have always done in Manchester and what we will do in New York. Only in this way can the club truly represent the city whose name it will carry.”
