Landmarks approves expansion of UWS historic district

Yesterday was a productive day for the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The city agency more than doubled the newly-designated West End-Collegiate Historic District on the Upper West Side, approved seven new individual landmarks, and heard testimony on the South Village Historic District, Curbed reported.

The extension of the West End-Collegiate Historic District adds 220 buildings to the previously 150-building historic district, on the east and west sides of West End Avenue between West 70th and 79th Streets.

The extension isn’t the first in the neighborhood, in which residents will now have to submit building changes to the Landmarks Preservation Commission for approval.

The seven new individual landmark designations include the Forest Park Carousel in Queens, the city’s first landmarked carousel; Jamaica Learning Center; the Church of St. Paul and the Apostle at 8 Columbus Avenue; and the Seward Park branch of the New York Public Library.

The commission also heard presentations and received public testimony on a new group of potential landmarks, including several buildings, interiors and another district extension.

A hearing about the South Village Historic District was the last step before the commission schedules a vote, which would result in the third extension to the Greenwich Village Historic District since it was established in 1969, if approved.
