Stuy Town sweats it out after transformer outage

Thousands of tenants at Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village have been asked to turn off their air conditioners, and two apartment buildings and a garage are temporarily without power after a transformer outage Monday.

In the wake of the transformer failure on 20th Street, Con Edison has urged customers to unplug all non-essential appliances and electronics. The buildings, meanwhile, will have no power for several hours this afternoon as the utility races to install an emergency generator, according to Con Edison and the Stuy Town/Peter Cooper Village Tenants Association.

“They’re really doing everything they can to prevent a blackout,” said Susan Steinberg, chair of the tenants’ association.

Tenants were told they could keep their refrigerators on, but to avoid using air conditioners, washers/dryers, televisions, microwaves and other appliances.

“This is something that we ask any of our customers when there are equipment problems,” said D. Joy Faber, a spokesperson for Con Edison. “Stuyvesant Town is a large load area.”

Steinberg said the temporary outage would impact two Stuy Town apartment buildings, 277 and 309 Avenue C, as well as a garage at 279 Avenue C. Peter Cooper Village apartments will not lose power during the procedure.

Con Edison officials said the buildings will be down for several hours while a one-megawatt emergency generator — powerful enough to provide electricity for 1,000 homes — is set up, and that the entire project should be over in a couple of days.

The 11,000-unit complex was hard hit during SuperStorm Sandy, losing power for about 10 days, officials said.

City Council member Dan Garodnick, a resident of Peter Cooper Village, said he has turned off his air conditioner and other appliances, and urged his neighbors to follow suit.

“The last thing we want is for a power outage in Stuyvesant Town,” Garodnick said. “We’ve had enough of that.”

Officials at CompassRock, which manages the complex on behalf of special servicer CW Capital, were not immediately available for comment.
