USPS pushes for sale of Bronx post office

The federal government is powering ahead with its plan to sell the historic Bronx General Post Office despite protests from borough residents and a labor coalition, DNAinfo reported.

The activists have appealed to the Postal Regulatory Commission, calling the proposed sale “arbitrary and capricious” and a violation of federal rules. The United States Post Office wants to sell historic post offices across the country to save money.

The Postal Service told DNAinfo it will continue its search for a buyer of the massive 175,000-square-foot building at 558 Grand Concourse. It filed a motion to dismiss the appeals, though petitioners are looking to challenge it.

A congressman has also joined the fight to halt the sale. Rep. José Serrano added a provision to a spending bill that would stop the sale of historic post offices until the USPS Inspector General completes an audit, which began this month, the report said. [DNAinfo] – Mark Maurer
