The Landmarks Preservation Commission gave high praise to a six-story retail project planned for 529 Broadway by investors Bobby Cayre and Jeff Sutton. Commissioner Michael Devonshire said the proposed project was “as exciting a building as I’ve seen [in my time] on the committee.”
The developers want to replace a warehouse with a 34,000-square-foot, glass-and-brick structure. The building would have window details adapted from the Prescott House, an hotel that dates to 1853 demolished during the Great Depression, as The Real Deal first reported.
The commission approved the plans by BKSK Architects with only minor suggested tweaks, according to Curbed. The commission asked the developers to address the color of the building (which is supposed to be cream but appeared white in some renderings), reduce the size of the retail signage, and work with nonprofit the Judd foundation to ensure that the building won’t block light to the nearby Donald Judd house.
