UPDATED, 5:45 p.m., October 7: A rogue crane at Gary Barnett’s One57 site menaced 57th Street once again. A crane at work on the luxury condominium development currently under construction stalled with a heavy load dangling in midair, according to preliminary reports.
As a precaution, 57th Street was shut off between Sixth and Seventh avenues from 11:20 a.m., officials told DNAinfo, in front of The Same 157 57th Street locale where a crane snapped and dangled atop the building after Hurricane Sandy. The street reopened later in the day at 5:13 p.m. The incident forced a weeklong area evacuation until the device was secured.
A replacement crane was hoisted to the top of the construction site and assembled horizontally in May, during which the nearby Alwyn Court and Briarcliff apartment buildings had to be evacuated, according to reports. There is no word yet as to whether today’s problem crane was this replacement. [DNAinfo] — Julie Strickland
