Mayor Bloomberg rejoices over housing shortage?

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has stuck his foot in his mouth again on his way out of office. This time he called New York City’s lack of affordable housing a “good sign,” adding to the sense that the billionaire mayor is out of touch with the needs of working class people.

“Somebody said that there’s not enough housing,” he said. “That’s a good sign. It doesn’t mean it isn’t a problem, but there are no vacancies. That will bring in investment, for people to build for all income levels, different kinds of housing.”

Bloomberg made the gaffe on his weekly WOR-AM radio show, the New York Post said.

“In cities, if you want to have lots of vacancies where everybody could easily find a place, you don’t have a good economy,” he added.

Bloomberg has also raised eyebrows of late after calling Bill de Blasio, his likely successor, “racist” and after expressing his adoration for high-heeled shoes, saying that he would wear pumps if he were a lady. [NYP]Christopher Cameron
