Park Tower Group and the Chetrit Group’s controversial residential projects along the Greenpoint waterfront are up for a City Planning Commission vote today.
The Greenpoint Landing portion of the project would include 10 towers and up to 5,500 apartment units on 22 acres near Newtown Creek, while 77 Commercial Street would include two 30-story towers housing 720 housing units between Box and Clay streets. The plan also calls for the inclusion of 1,300 units of affordable housing, 1.4 acres of park land, a 640-seat public school at Franklin and DuPont streets and ground-level retail.
Should they muster City Planning approval today, the City Council would have 50 days to weigh in with a final say.
The developments have drawn a firestorm of criticism from the Greenpoint community and were shot down by Community Board 1 planned to sue the developers in September. Residents have also planned to sue the developers for an alleged disregard for environmental protections, demanding a new environmental study before any work begins. [Crain’s] — Julie Strickland
