Despite earlier concerns about his son’s high school commute, Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio has committed to moving into Hizzoner’s official residence, Gracie Mansion.
He and his family will make a temporary move to the five-bedroom estate overlooking the East River at East End Avenue and 88th Street, he said on his website today. The move will occur over the next few months, he said.
“It’s a practical choice but one that we make with respect and gratitude for the people of New York City,” de Blasio said in a statement, also citing logistical and security reasons prompting the decision.
While campaigning, de Blasio vowed to move to the home, which features a new $1.25 million kitchen and 14 acres of parkland. But then he said he might stay at his non-renovated Park Slope row house, which he does not plan to sell.
Sofia Song of StreetEasy has estimated Gracie Mansion is worth between $100 million and $150 million. [Transition 2013] — Mark Maurer
