Brooklyn Hospital Center proposes mixed-use plan for LICH
Proposal would ax inpatient services and bring 1,000 apartments
Brooklyn Hospital Center has proposed an alternative plan for the troubled Long Island College Hospital involving 1,000 mixed-income apartments, just a month after Fortis Property Group’s condominium proposal for the Cobble Hill site, owned by SUNY Downstate Medical Center, was tabled.
Plans call for two clinics, two urgent care centers and apartments — 350 of which would be built as affordable housing. Only outpatient services would be offered; for inpatient procedures, patients would need to be admitted at the Brooklyn Hospital Center, at 121 Dekalb Avenue, in Fort Greene.
The pricey brownstone Brooklyn real estate belonging to LICH would go along with the deal, Crain’s reported.
Formal proposals for how to reconfigure the embattled healthcare complex were due in September, but Brooklyn Hospital Center did not submit. Of the six proposals received, Fortis’ plan to build condominiums and an urgent care facility was considered the most promising. But soon it was set aside after protests from Cobble Hill residents.
