Community groups, unions and New York City Public Advocate Letitia James selected a panel over the weekend that will review proposals for developing the Long Island College Hospital in Cobble Hill.
The panel includes City Council member Carlos Menchaca of Red Hook and Fred Hyde, a Columbia University health policy professor. The State University of New York, however, will retain more than half the final vote for the plans. The new request for proposals puts an emphasis on continuing to operate the troubled site as a hospital, rather than convert it to condominiums.
Last month, the community groups and unions agreed on a settlement that would restart the RFP process. SUNY is expected to give up ownership to a new entity by May. Prior to a contempt hearing, SUNY was in the final stages of a sales process that turned out bidders including Fortis Property Group, Don Peebles, Brooklyn Hospital and New York University.
