Collecting overdue water charges from New York City landlords can be a pain in the neck for city officials — even from property owners who can afford to foot the bill.
New York University, for example, currently owes more than $16,000 in total on a couple of its campus water meters, the New York Post reported. But rapper and record producer Sean “P. Diddy” Combs racked up an even bigger bill, and just paid $23,400 for water use at former luxury home at 807 Park Avenue, according to the article.
In total, the city is owed $149 million for delinquent water bills stemming mostly from buildings housing hospitals, nursing sites, religious groups and residents, the Post reported.
Despite being in the red, property owners rarely have their water access cut off, the Post reported. Moreover, the city has a history of relieving homeowners of their water bill if facing foreclosure, as previously reported. [NYP, 4th item] — Angela Hunt
