A townhouse in Brooklyn Heights is on the market with an asking price of $16 million, a potentially record-breaking price for single-family homes in the neighborhood.
Built in 1859, the landmark 7,900-square-foot property at 192 Columbia Heights has five floors, two terraces, backyard, three working fireplaces, floor-to-ceiling bay windows, a walnut-and-cherry staircase and original oak parquet flooring. The residence also includes three full baths and two powder rooms.
The current owners are Don and Saundra Cornwell, who bought the property in 1995 from Tony Award-winning set designer Heidi Ettinger, who had owned it since 1974. The Cromwells renovated the property in 1996 and 1997.
According to information provided to the sellers, the fifth floor at one point served as a writer’s nest for author Norman Mailer. The large room is now used as a home gym.
If the Cromwells’ asking price is met, it would set a record for single-family homes in the neighborhood, beating the previous record of a townhouse at 212 Columbia Heights being sold for $11 million in 2012.
Listing broker Ellen Newman of the Corcoran Group, said the asking price was justified by the home’s location, its renovation and views. [NYT] —TRD
