Rumors fly of NYC Google Fiber launch: VIDEO

Plan may call for multi-dwelling apartment, small- and medium-sized business push

A Google job ad for a Fiber regional  sales manager in New York City has sparked rumors the company is gearing up for a launch of its fiber-optic network.

Although a spokesperson said there are currently no plans to expand into the Big Apple, the listing calls for a manager that will push Fiber sales for multi-dwelling apartments and small- and medium-sized businesses, Ars Technica reported.

Verizon FiOS has been rolling out its own broadband service across the city, but slowly, according to the article. Manhattan’s tech firms, for example, are begging for better-equipped office space, as previously reported.

“This will certainly light a fire under current broadband providers,” CNBC said.

So far, Google has focused on installing Fiber in smaller cities more likely to catalyze the permit process, according to Ars. Google is also hiring a network infrastructure design manager in the city, the article said. [Ars Technica] and [CNBC]Angela Hunt
