The dirtiest hotel in the U.S. is about to be sold for nearly $200 million.

Hotel Carter, a 600-room hotel near Times Square, grabbed the dubious honor of being named the dirtiest hotel in the nation three times on Tripadvisor’s America survey. And though the dirty list was last published in 2012, the hotel reportedly hasn’t cleaned up its act.

“It’s the dirtiest and best located hotel in New York City,” Lawrence Wolfe, who represents the seller, told CNBC Tuesday. “It was under-managed and neglected.”

Who the buyer is is still unknown. But, Wolfe told CNBC, “we are near to a selection.”

The hotel first opened in the 1930s as the Hotel Dixie. Code violations and a homicide have given the Carter a bad name over the years. Still, 25 bids were received for the hotel.

The sale is expected to be in the $180 million range, according to CNBC. The transaction will be followed by a full-gut renovation that will cost between $100 and $125 million. [CNBC] — Claire Moses
