New drawings reveal that Extell Development’s Nordstrom Tower at 225 West 57th Street would be the world’s tallest residential building — if the project proceeds as planned.
The record 1,775 feet would be achieved thanks to the addition of a previously unannounced spire, revealed in drawings obtained by New York YIMBY. The building would clock in at just one foot shorter than 1 WTC and nudge CIM and Macklowe Properties’ 432 Park out of the projected top spot. Indeed, the condo tower and future Nordstrom flagship would rise 300 feet above any other man-made structure in Midtown, according to New York YIMBY’s math.
Nordstrom Tower is also slated to surpass the 1,451-foot height of Chicago’s Willis Tower, the current record-holder. The most recent permits indicate the building will comprise 1.2 million square feet of space, according to New York YIMBY.
The cantilevered design by Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill received approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission in October, and construction is underway. The project is scheduled for completion in 2018. [New York YIMBY] — Tom DiChristopher
