Residents who have long opposed a waste transfer station on the Upper East Side are now trying to make the best of the situation.
Upper East Side community groups are looking to transform the proposed transfer station into a park, the New York Daily News reported.
Under the groups’ proposal, a quarter-mile ramp that is supposed to carry 500 garbage trucks per day would be relocated, and a green walkway modeled after the High Line would be placed on top. The roof of the transfer station would become a park, similar to the recreation area on top of the sewage treatment plant along the Hudson River in West Harlem.
The ramp would be relocated to the periphery of the nearby Asphalt Green complex, a recreational facility used by the neighborhood’s school children.
The waste transfer station was proposed in 2006 by then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Mayor Bill de Blasio, despite community opposition, is forging ahead with the plan. [NYDN] — Claire Moses
