A 19th-century townhouse on the Upper East Side just traded hands for $23.5 million, or a little over $2,600 per foot. That’s well over double the $9.4 million it sold for in 2010.
Built in 1883 by Scottish architect John Jardine for developer Edward Kilpatrick, the 8,950-square-foot, 23-foot-wide brownstone has five bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms, and boasts an elevator and a wood-burning fireplace. It’s located at 51 East 80th Street, between Park and Madison avenues.

The buyer is an LLC listed as North Fifth. According to mortgage documents, Richard Gold, a managing member of the LLC, took out a $16.5 million mortgage on July 24. Gold is an executive at private investment firm General Atlantic. The brokers on the deal and asking price weren’t immediately identified.
The seller, an LLC listed as 51 East 80th Street, paid $9.43 million for the house in 2010, according to property records. Back then, it was listed for $12.4 million by Stribling & Associates’ June Iseman and Sharon Flynn. When reached by phone today, Iseman reacted to the new selling price with “oh my goodness!”
