The City Council approved Slate Property Group’s plan yesterday to construct a mixed-use building in Ridgewood, Queens where artists would be charged $10 per year to rent part of a 3,000-square-foot community space.
Slate Property Group, led by Martin Nussbaum and David Schwartz, agreed to designate 50 percent of the residential component as affordable housing. There will be 88 apartments in addition to 7,000 square feet of commercial space. The property at 176 Woodward Avenue is zoned for industrial use.
In June, Queens Borough President Melinda Katz approved a plan to rezone a portion of Ridgewood from manufacturing to residential, thus permitting the construction of apartments at 176 Woodward and elsewhere, as previously reported.
The developer is expected to talk with Council member Antonio Reynoso and several artist groups before selecting the artists and community group that will get to rent the space for a reduced price. [DNAinfo] — Mark Maurer
