Hotelier Ian Schrager’s planned Public Hotel on the Lower East Side has been hit with a stop-work order.
The 25-story, 200,000-square-foot hotel at 215 Chrystie Street is slated to hold 370 hotel rooms and 11 full- and half-floor condominium units on the upper floors. The project would mark the launch of the brand in New York City. Schrager plans to build another Public outpost on the far West Side.
The Department of Buildings issued the order Tuesday for “unsafe excavation work,” according to Bowery Boogie.
Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron is designing the hotel, while Douglas Elliman Development Marketing is handling sales for the residential component. The Public hotel brand debuted in Chicago in 2011.
Schrager and his partner the Witkoff Group acquired the Chrystie Street in 2012 from landlord Rubin Schron for roughly $50 million, as previously reported. [Bowery Boogie] — Mark Maurer
