A Brooklyn landlord is accusing City Council member Darlene Mealy of failing to pay $7,500 in rent and says she had him arrested when he took action to collect.
Retired firefighter Robert Mulzac told the New York Post that Mealy has not paid rent on her district office at 203 Ralph Avenue for the last five months. The dispute escalated last week when Mulzac changed the building’s locks. Mealy called the police in response, resulting in his arrest, the newspaper reported.
Mulzac is now airing the dispute openly. He has hung three banners from the front of the building that call Mealy a “deadbeat tenant” and allege that she offered to pay him $1,000 per month, rather than the $1,250 he says she owed, according to the Post.
Mealy, whose district includes parts of Bedford-Stuyvesant and Brownsville, confirmed to the Post that she is involved in the dispute but declined to elaborate. [NYP] – Tom DiChristopher
