A 19th-century Greek Orthodox church destroyed during the 9/11 attacks is finally being resurrected at a cost of $38 million.
Last week, renderings where revealed of the Byzantine-style church, dubbed St. Nicholas National Shrine, designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.
Church officials have now told the New York Post that they have already raised $7.2 million toward construction, which is scheduled for completion in 2016.
The tiny four-story building was crushed by the collapse of the South Tower and was the only church destroyed in the attacks.
“I don’t think [continuing fund-raising] is daunting,” the Rev. Evagoras Constamides, a church spokesperson, told the Post. “Today is an excellent example that our community is ready . . . to respond to this effort.” [NYP] –Christopher Cameron
