UPDATED, 11:57 am., Dec. 10: Sam Chang of McSam Hotel Group filed permits today for a 406-room Midtown West hotel on a site he bought in August for $50.8 million.

The hotel developer plans to construct a 20-story, 123,000-square-foot property at 334 West 36th Street, between Eighth and Ninth avenues. The building would house a ground-floor restaurant, about 22 rooms apiece from floors two to 14, and 20 rooms apiece from floors 15 to 20, according to the permits.

Gene Kaufman was hired to serve as the architect of record.

Chang bought the six-story, 58,644-square-foot building occupied by the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health that is now on the site. Postgraduate Center for Mental Health is slated to exit the premises next year, as reported.

The six-story building will be demolished by April and the hotel is expected to open by spring 2017, Chang told TRD.

“I’m planning to develop one hotel at a time,” Chang said. “I will work on the Eighth Avenue Holiday Inn until April and then focus on this hotel.”

Earlier this month, Chang filed plans for a hotel-and-residential complex in Flushing, Queens, as TRD reported.
