The number of housing units planned for New York over the coming years is rising dramatically.
According to permit applications filed with the Department of Buildings in 2014, developers aim to bring 44,825 units to the five boroughs, according to New York YIMBY. In 2013, that number was closer to 23,000.
Permit applications called for a total of 19,355 units in Brooklyn, up from 8,473 the year before, the website reported. In Queens, the number almost doubled to 9,367 in 2014, up from 4,316 in 2013. In Manhattan, 11,113 new units were proposed, up from 2013’s 6,528.
The year’s filings with the DOB also show taller skyscrapers are on the way, according to YIMBY. There were 51 applications for towers of 300 feet or taller, and 17 of those are slated to rise more than 500 feet. By comparison, Boston currently has a total of 16 buildings that exceed 500 feet. San Francisco has 18.
As far as design goes, architecture firms SLCE, Goldstein Hill & West and Handel Architects led the way in the number of filings last year. [NY YIMBY] — Claire Moses
