Firefighters recovered two bodies from the ruins of last week’s East Village gas explosion.
The two fatal victims of the explosion are Nicholas Figueroa, 23 — who was on a date at Sushi Park at 121 Second Avenue, the restaurant where the blast took place on Thursday afternoon — and Moises Locon, 27, who worked as a busboy at the restaurant, according to the New York Post. While Figueroa’s body was “all intact” and “nothing burned him,” the family told the newspaper, Locon was harder to identify because his body was too mangled. Locon’s identity will be confirmed through dental records, the newspaper reported.
An illegally tapped gas line in the basement of the building likely caused the explosion, which also injured 25 people, the newspaper reported.
East-Harlem resident Figueroa and Locon, who lived in Elmhurs, Queens, had been missing since the explosion on Thursday around 3:15 p.m. [NYP] — Claire Moses
