Today, Mayor Bill de Blasio will take the next step toward rezoning East New York, Brooklyn, with the announcement of a timeline for the review process.

The lengthy land use review will start by September, according to the New York Daily News, when the city will unveil the specific boundaries of the rezoning and the affordability requirements for new buildings.

“It gives the community more time to give input to the plan, which is what a lot of the community wanted,” said East New York Councilmember Rafael Espinal.

In March, City Plannining Commissioner Carl Weisbrod said he expected to certify a rezoning application for East New York this spring.

The rezoning is expected to allow developers to increase density in the neighborhood, and is an important component of de Blasio’s housing plan to construct or preserve 200,000 affordable units over a decade. [NYDN] — Tess Hofmann
