The first new subway station in NYC in 25 years opens today. After transit and city officials take an inaugural ride, the Hudson Yards 7 train station at West 34th Street and 11th Avenue will open to the public at 1 p.m.

The Bloomberg administration pumped $2.4 billion into the project, which encouraged development in the area, according to the New York Daily News.

“Once the No. 7 (extension) was announced, that really accelerated development,” Mitchell Moss, director of the New York University Rudin Center for Transportation, told the Daily News. “The secret to creating housing is to build mass transit.”

The new station extents the 7 train about 1.5 miles from Times Square. It will give New Yorkers increased access to the Jacob Javits Center, Hudson Yards and the High Line.

Until now, people heading west in Midtown had to walk from Eighth Avenue. The new stop is expected to handle 35,000 riders at its peak hour, according to the MTA. [NYDN]Christopher Cameron
