Pierhouse blocks city-protected scenic view, opponents claim

Opposition group commissioned study into Toll Bros., Starwood development

Toll Brothers and Starwood Capital Group’s Pierhouse hotel and condo development in Brooklyn Bridge Park is intruding upon a city-protected scenic view, opponents of the project allege in a new report.

The development, constructed on public land along the East River, rises too high above the Brooklyn Heights Promenade and breaks city zoning rules by encroaching on the scenic view by nearly 20 feet, the report, commissioned by opposition group Save the View Now, found.

The Department of Buildings said it would review the report’s findings, according to DNAinfo. The DOB previously approved plans for the building in question at 130 Furman Street – one of two properties comprising the project — saying they believed it would not breach the area’s sight lines.

The Pierhouse development is slated to hold 108 condos priced between $1.1 million and $11.1 million as well as a hotel. But it has faced fervent opposition from Save the View Now that has halted work in the past – though a judge dismissed a lawsuit last month filed by the group against the project.
