Restaurateur Danny Meyer, the man behind the Union Square Cafe and Gramercy Tavern, will take charge of the new catering and events space on the top floor of Fosun International’s 28 Liberty Street in the Financial District.
The former One Chase Manhattan Plaza tower’s 60th floor was once a private conference center and dining room for the bank’s executives. The wide-open hall has 360-degree views of the surrounding area.
The new events space will be reserved for the building’s office tenants, and won’t be open to the public, the New York Post reported.
Fosun, the massive Chinese conglomerate and investment firm, has undertaken a $150 million renovation of the 2.2 million-square-foot building.
Their plan, approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in August, is to replace the building’s street-level facade with glass panes and create 200,000 square feet of retail space both on that level, and on five below-grade floors.
Fosun bought the building back in 2013 for $725 million.
Last month, Fosun’s chairman Guo Changchang, called the “Chinese Warren Buffet,” briefly disappeared. It turned out he’d been detained by Chinese authorities. He’s since been released. [NYP] – Ariel Stulberg
