The South Street Seaport is getting Momofuku’d: David Chang is opening a spot at Howard Hughes Corp.’s Pier 17.
Chang, known for his distaste for convention, will open a new restaurant at Howard Hughes’ three-level pier currently under construction, the New York Post reported.
Details for how much space, terms of the lease, and when the eatery would open were not released. The announcement “for a dynamic new restaurant concept” was made in a letter from Howard Hughes CEO David R. Weinreb to shareholders, according to the Post.
Sources told the newspaper the restaurant would be sit-down.
Chang has several Asian-inspired restaurants throughout the city, including Momofuku Ko in the East Village.
Another star chef, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, is opening a 40,000-square-foot seafood-themed food hall at a building adjacent to the pier.
Howard Hughes plans to develop or renovate 448,000 gross square feet in the historic neighborhood. Last October, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved the developer’s plan — sans rooftop canopy — for Pier 17. After much community opposition, the developer nixed plans for a 52-story luxury condominium tower at The Former Fulton Street Fish Market. It is unclear what will built at the site.
