The owner of an artists’ co-working space in Ridgewood is scouting warehouses in Brooklyn and Queens to open a 30,000-square-foot indoor soccer and sports facility.
Melissa Manning, who last year opened the Rockwall Studios space inside a 49,000-square-foot former warehouse in Queens, has checked out similar spaces in Ridgewood and Gowanus for her sports complex, sources said.
A regulation soccer field can range in size from 45,000 to nearly 120,000 square feet, so indoor pitches are generally much smaller, often walled in with smaller goals.
Manning, who could not be reached for comment, is said to be looking for space that would accommodate fields of 7,000 to 9,000 square feet, with additional room for volleyball courts, a juice bar and locker rooms.
Similar concepts can be found at the Pitch in Williamsburg (next to McCarren Park) and the Astoria Sports Complex on 38th Street.
Major League Soccer team New York City FC is also searching for a permanent home. The club, which currently plays at Yankee Stadium, last year proposed building a stadium at Columbia University.
Manning’s co-working space at 10-80 Wyckoff Avenue in Ridgewood caters to artists and musicians, and is one of more than 50 co-working spaces that cover more than 1 million square feet in Brooklyn.
