Test-driving NYC’s first batch of micro units: VIDEO

A reporter moved into the building for just one night

Last week, tenants were given the green light to move into the first newly constructed micro units in the city at Carmel Place On East 27th Street between First and Second Avenues. A reporter joined the new tenants for one night.

The development’s 55 units range between 265 and 360 square feet, and market-rate units cost between $2,650 and $3,150 a month. And despite the steep cost and minuscule size, demand for micro units is red hot. Officials now are looking for ways to add more. And planning officials have proposed axing New York’s requirement that new apartments span a minimum of 400 square feet.
