Landmarks greenlights Maya Lin-designed manse in Tribeca

Despite some complaints that its façade looks like Swiss cheese, the Landmarks Preservation Commission gave its stamp of approval to a new single-family mansion in Tribeca.

Designed by architects Maya Lin and William Bialosky, 11 Hubert Street can now be converted from a 55,000-square-foot garage to a single-family home following Tuesday night’s LPC hearing, Curbed reported.

Plans call for adding two stories to the four-story structure. Built in the 1930s, the building has also been used as a warehouse and storage facility.

Previously, the Historic Districts Council compared the building’s façade to a “block of Swiss cheese.” But LPC Commissioner Frederick Bland had a different view, calling it a “wonderful” project that’s “very appropriate” for the neighborhood.

Made with materials including stone, steel, perforated metal and glass, Lin said the design would evoke the “functionality of the cast iron and metalwork” that’s so pervasive in the neighborhood.

An unnamed buyer in 2014 purchased the property from architect Winka Dubbledam for $15.3 million. [Curbed] – E.B. Solomont
