The Brearley School will expand its campus with a new 12-story building on the corner of East End Avenue and East 83rd Street, according to plans filed with the city on Tuesday.
The elite all-girls private school won approval for $50 million in tax-exempt bonds to help fund the expansion plans.
The new building, at 590 East 83rd Street, is adjacent to the school’s current 12-story building and will span 79,000 square feet, according to Department of Buildings filings. The new building will include, along with classrooms and offices, an exercise room, library, two-level auditorium and gym.
Brearley did not immediate return a request for comment.
The private school paid $26.4 million in 2010 to purchase three apartment buildings at 70-74 East End Avenue to to make way for the new facility. Brearley also plans to renovate its current 117,180-square-foot location at 610 East 83rd Street. Tuition at Brearley is north of $43,000 a year.
To fund construction, Brearley planned to use $37.5 million from a capital campaign and $20 million from its $132.5 million endowment, in addition to the bond money, Bloomberg reported last year.
