Late son of Ponzi schemer bought the apartment for $4.4 million in 2008

An Upper East Side apartment formerly owned by Andrew Madoff, the late son of convicted fraudster Bernie Madoff, has sold for $5.4 million.

Madoff’s estate listed the condominium unit at 429 East 74th Street for sale at $5.9 million in February, two years after he died from cancer at age 48. He reportedly left behind a $15 million fortune, which was to be divided among his ex-wife, his daughters and his fiancee Catherine Hooper.

He had purchased the apartment for $4.4 million in 2008, records show. The more recent sales price equates to a price per square foot of approximately $1,700.

Daniella Schlisser and Matthew Hughes of Brown Harris Stevens had the listing. They were not immediately available for comment.

The full fifth-floor apartment has five bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms across 3,215 square feet. The building, known as LUX 74, has just 12 apartments across seven floors. It was built in 2007.

Madoff was never charged with any involvement in his father’s Ponzi scheme. His brother Mark, Bernie’s second son, committed suicide in 2010.
