For a Communist, Yugoslav president Josip Broz Tito owned some swanky New York digs. And now, 24 years after the dissolution of the Yugoslav state, a worldwide portfolio of high-end properties owned by the former government is set to hit the market.
Last week, the leaders of the five countries that once composed Yugoslavia agreed to sell 51 remaining properties acquired by Tito, according to the New York Post. In New York, a Gilded Age mansion that was once occupied by Emily Thorn Vanderbilt Sloane at 854 Fifth Avenue will soon list. It was once the seat of the Yugoslavian mission to the UN.
Similar properties have recently listed for between $28 million and $36 million, according to the Post.
At 730 Park Avenue, a six-bedroom, four bathroom duplex apartment will also hit the market. It’s valued at some $20 million, but has been unoccupied since 1992. Apparently Serbia has been paying the $14,000 per month maintenance fee for 24 years. [NYP] –Christopher Cameron
