Bergdorf Goodman gains landmark status
Landmarks Commission designates 10 landmarks, ending busy 2016
Bergdorf Goodman is an iconic destination for any well-heeled shopper worth his or her salt. And the upscale department store is now officially a New York City landmark.
The site at 754 Fifth Avenue is of 10 new sites designated by the Landmarks Preservation Commission, which had the department store building under landmark consideration since 1970, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Commissioners have been working to clear pending sites that have been lingering, some for decades. New York City’s landmarks law turned 50 last year.
This year, the commission 40 landmarks in all, compared to six in 2015. This year’s designations ranged from a farmhouse on City Island to the Pepsi-Cola sign in Long Island City. Twelve of the landmarks designated in 2016 were in Midtown East and 26 sites were from the commission’s backlog, according to New York YIMBY. [WSJ] — E.B. Solomont
