Movie props maker The Specialists Ltd. filed plans for a 143,000-square-foot building in Ridgewood, Queens to store cars, military vehicles, trucks and “futuristic hover vehicles” for film shoots.
The planned four-story property at 48-05 Metropolitan Avenue will replace an existing 63,000-square-foot building and include a restaurant space.
“The New York film industry is maxed out,” the company wrote in an application for tax abatements and exemptions from the New York City Industrial Development Agency last year. “Studios are being built; producers want to make movies here; but there is no room for the support services to work on all these movies in New York City.”
According to the application, the project is expected to cost $47.45 million.
The Specialists already operates a Soho studio with thousands of weapons rebuilt to fire blanks so that they can be used in film shoots.
