City agencies tapped development firm Breaking Ground and a joint venture between Lemle & Wolff Development, Alembic Community Development and housing nonprofit the Bridge to build two affordable housing projects on New York City Housing Authority-owned land in Mott Haven.
Breaking Ground is set to build 149 units of senior housing at the Betances V social housing project at East 142nd Street between Willis and Brook avenues, according to NYCHA, the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development and the New York City Housing Development Corporation in a joint statement Friday.
Lemle & Wolff and its partners would construct a 101-unit rental building for low-income tenants at the nearby Betances VI project. Both buildings will have a set aside for formerly homeless and NYCHA-resident households, the agencies said.
The projects are part of NYCHA’s so-called “100 percent affordable housing” program, launched under its latest 10-year strategic plan, which calls for the construction of new affordable housing units on underused public land.
HPD commissioner Maria Torres-Springer said the projects are part of a plan “to make use of scarce city land and advance our shared goals of providing affordable housing and economic opportunity to all New Yorkers.”
NYCHA and HPD issued requests for proposals for the two sites last year. The projects fall within the Make Mott Haven Transformation Plan, which aims to improve housing supply and create economic opportunities for locals.
