Artsy house by original Whitney museum architect hits the market

Brutal! Modernist Marcel Breuer is best known for designing the original Whitney Museum of Art on the Upper East Side. Of course, that masterpiece of brutalism is now the Met Breuer. But Breuer wasn’t just an institutional architect and the homes he designed are surprisingly cozy.

Located at 471 Derby Milford Road in Orange, Conn., a 4,000-square-foot house by Breuer just hit the market asking $1.6 million, according to 6sqft.

Known as the Donald N. Clark House, Breuer designed the boxy getaway in the 1950s on a 5.5-acre property that eventually came to house an assortment of unique artwork and sculptures. But the art doesn’t stop outside the house; inside is enough wall space and artistic details to make even the most jaded post-modernist drool.

Barbara Lehrer of Coldwell Banker has the listing. Check it out below.
