Amazon confirms plan for massive distribution center on Staten Island
E-commerce giant moving into 855K sf, $100M facility
Amazon confirmed on Wednesday that it will open a distribution center on Staten Island, although it will be slightly smaller than previously thought.
The company has announced that it will move into an 855,000-square-foot, $100 million facility on Staten Island’s west shore, according to the New York Post. The paper had previously reported that the center would be 975,000 square feet.
The state’s Excelsior Jobs Program will provide Amazon with $18 million in tax breaks, which will be based on keeping 886 existing jobs in New York and creating new ones over the next five years. The company says it will hire 2,250 full-time employees for the center, less than half of the 5,000 robots that will also work there.
Amazon already has smaller centers in the city at locations such as 34th Street and Sunset Park. The company opened its first physical bookstore in New York City at Time Warner Center earlier this year and is planning its second one at 72 Spring Street. [NYP] – Eddie Small
