This mansion deal is the largest sale of the decade for Detroit

The mansion sold for $2.5 million making it the largest Detroit sale in the past decade, at least according to public records reviewed by Mansion Global.

The 35,000-square-foot mansion, formerly owned by Bishop Wayne Jackson, the home, known as the Bishop’s Residence, has 13 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms — space that was necessary for Jackson and his wife’s nine children who lived there since 1995.

The house was built in 1926 by Boston-based architects, McGinnis and Walsh, for their client, the Catholic Bishop of Detroit, using funds from a Detroit carriage and car company, Fisher Body. Materials for the house were imported from Europe, such as marble from Italy and wood from Germany.

The California buyer bought the house off-market last week after determining he was getting the best possible deal on the house: “We had a historical inspector here, and he said you couldn’t build this home for $50 million today,” said the buyer’s agent Antonio Rodriguez of Re/Max Suburban.

The buyer intends on renovating the house and might even make the property into a luxurious bed and breakfast.
