The number of heat complaints this year has skyrocketed, with most of the 311 calls coming from the city’s least expensive neighborhoods.

There have been 29,386 heat complaints since the beginning of 2018, a large jump from the 8,092 seen during the same time period last year, the New York Daily News reported. In the past two years, the most calls originated from Erasmus in Brooklyn, Hamilton Heights in Manhattan and Norwood in the Bronx, according to a new report by RentHop. The cost of one-bedroom apartments in those neighborhoods are $1,598 to $1,950 a month, compared to the city’s median rent of $3,050.

“The same addresses and neighborhoods are having these issues year after year,” Shane Leese, a data scientist for RentHop who compiled the report, told the Daily News. “The data is very clear. It doesn’t seem to be getting addressed.”

The address with the most 311 heat complaints was 89-21 Elmhurst Avenue in Queens, where 1,298 complaints have been filed from Oct. 1 to Jan. 7. Public records show the owner as Central Queens Properties. The city will sometimes make emergency repairs at buildings and then bill the landlord. Such repairs cost the city roughly $10 million each year. [NYDN]Kathryn Brenzel
