J. Crew could be replacing Bank of New York Mellon at Brookfield Place.
The upscale clothing retailer is looking to move its corporate headquarters, and BNY Mellon’s 300,000-square-foot space at 225 Liberty Street has emerged as a top contender, according to the Commercial Observer. J. Crew would sign a sublease to take over the space.
The company’s current headquarters is at 770 Broadway, where it occupies more than 350,000 square feet. However, its landlord Vornado Realty Trust has already bought out some of Kmart’s space at the building to give Facebook room to grow by 78,000 square feet, and it could make the same move with the building’s other tenants.
BNY Mellon said in February that it would leave the Brookfield Property Partners building to join other employees at 101 Barclay Street, even though the company is just a few years into its 20-year lease. It takes up floors 17 to 22 at the building.
The bank had moved to Brookfield Place after the $585 million sale of its One Wall Street headquarters in 2014 to a joint venture spearheaded by Macklowe Properties. [CO] – Eddie Small
