What happens to the site of a tragedy?
In the case of London’s Grenfell Tower, the surrounding housing estate will be revamped, while the site of the tower itself will be turned into a memorial, according to Architect’s Newspaper.
Adjaye Associates is one of six architecture firms selected to re-imagine the housing complex, which was first designed in 1964. Backed by government funding to the tune of $21 million, their visioning process involves consultation with residents on issues ranging from maintenance to ventilation, accessibility to security, however the site of Grenfell Tower has been excluded from planning effort.
Complete demolition of the tower is slated for the end of the year, after which the government announced it would entrust the land to the families of the people who died in the fire. Before the site is razed, a forensic analysis must be completed. [AN] — Erin Hudson
