Thousands of apartments will replace a vacant hospital in Queens

Almost all units at site in the Rockaways will be affordable

A vacant hospital in the Rockaways is set to be replaced by thousands of new apartments.

The former site of the Peninsula Hospital will become a 17-building residential complex with 2,200 apartments, roughly 1,900 of which will be affordable, according to Politico. The news comes about two years after Arker Companies bought the site with Northeast Brooklyn Housing Development Corporation for $19 million.

The development will also include a gym, a medical facility, and more than 151,000 square feet of retail space. Senior housing will comprise 270 of the units.

The Aufgang Architects-designed project should be completely finished in 2034.

Arker Companies is also working with Two Trees Management on a pair of 16-story apartments on New York City Housing Authority land in Boerum Hill and a pair of residential projects in East New York totaling 344 units. [Curbed and Politico] – Eddie Small
