UPDATED, 10:05 a.m., April 18: Yankee Stadium’s days as the only major sports arena in the South Bronx could be numbered.
A partnership led by Related Companies has submitted plans to Empire State Development for a massive new development on the South Bronx waterfront, according to YIMBY. The $700 million project would rise above rail yards in the borough and include a 26,000-seat soccer stadium, a 25,000-square-foot medical facility, 150,000 square feet of retail, an 85,000-square-foot park and about 550 units of affordable housing.
The stadium would be the home arena for the New York City Football Club, which currently plays its games in Yankee Stadium.
Related submitted the plans to Empire State Development with Somerset Partners and the New York City Football Club as part of an RFP process, and they are considered favorites to land the winning bid. Somerset had planned to build a massive project with the Chetrit Group near the RFP site, but the companies recently decided to sell that project to Brookfield Property Partners.
The RFP site spans 12.8 acres with 1,200 feet of space along the waterfront. Related expects to finish its project in 2022 if it is selected. [YIMBY] – Eddie Small
