As nonunion construction firms continue to gobble up market share, some trades are taking steps to be more competitive.
At the The Real Deal‘s 11th annual New York Showcase, a panel of construction and real estate professionals discussed how some trades are making work-rule and wage changes in order to keep pace with their nonunion counterparts. For some, though, these changes aren’t happening fast enough, as nonunion companies increasingly gain ground in new sectors like high-rise office construction.
The panel featured Gary LaBarbera, president of the Building and Construction Trade Council of Greater New York; Lou Coletti, president of the Building Trades Employers’ Association; Jay Badame, head of AECOM Tishman; and John Banks, president of the Real Estate Board of New York.
