Construction worker trapped after wall collapses at Brooklyn site

A recovery effort is underway at the Sunset Park location

A construction worker is trapped under rubble after a wall collapsed at a Brooklyn site.

The fire department is conducting a recovery effort after a retaining wall cracked and collapsed at the 39th Street site near Seventh Avenue in Sunset Park at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, the New York Daily News reported. Several workers were at the scene, but one 47-year-old didn’t make it out.

Inspectors from the Department of Buildings and structural engineers are helping the FDNY, according to a separate WABC report. Con Edison is also helping with a vacuum truck to clear debris faster.

The site is owned by 348 37th St. LLC, and has two contractors, Ground to Sky City Builders Corp. and WSC Group LLC in Brooklyn. The site had permits and there is no record of complaints or violations, WABC reported.

The recovery effort last for several hours on Wednesday, but rain hindered the work, reports said.

City Council member Carlos Menchaca voiced concerns about the contractor.

“This is an incredibly unsafe work site. These were immigrant workers,” he said. “We’re looking at everything that was supposed to restrain that wall. We’re going to investigate any site this contractor has open.” [NYDN] — Meenal Vamburkar
